The South Shore Renaissance Residency
About the residency
Founded by Photographers of Colour, a community-based venture committed to amplifying the voices, imagery, and storytelling of marginalized creators, The South Shore Renaissance Residency was established for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and people of color) Chicago-based photographers.
Our Artist-In-Residence will be awarded a grant to contribute to their work, have access to housing, part-time and full-time employment, a working studio, printing services, staging gallery, and darkroom. Artists are required to reside in South Shore, Chicago for the entire duration of their residency; the assignment, housing, artist studio, staging gallery, and darkroom are in the South Shore, Chicago neighborhood.
Photographers will work in collaboration with the South Shore Chamber of Commerce, Leave No Veteran Behind, the Neighborhood Network Alliance, and other notable organizations, to actively foster an environment of learning, promote, and celebrate the legacy and history of the South Shore, Chicago community—Artists will have the opportunity to connect deeply with their own practice in the context of our vibrant, multifaceted community. In addition, our Artist-In-Residence will be given an assignment and one-year to complete it in its entirety.
Our mission is to empower photographers with tools of the industry, and educate aspiring photographers with technical training and mentorship, and elevate those excluded creatives in the photography community seeking to play an essential role in the narrative of community building.
